10 Things To Do With a Potato Masher

So I am pretty sure almost every house in America owns one.  Some fancy, some simple, some inherited and some that haven't seen the light of day in years!  They come in about as many different shapes, sizes and colors as there are uses for it.  This list is by no means conclusive, just a handful of the many.  I'd be interested to hear what you use your potato masher for so feel free to comment and let me know!

  1. Mash potatoes.  I know dreadfully obvious but it does deserve a place on the list since it is the name of this gadget!
  2. Mash other fruits and veggies.  Like bananas for banana bread and apples to make applesauce.
  3. Mix meatloaf.  Hate getting your hands dirty mixing the meatloaf?  Well dig in that drawer and pull out the ever trusty potato masher.
  4. Crumble ground beef, turkey, chicken.  Works brilliantly to break up the brick of meat that seems to occur when cooking.  Since I have never found a spatula that works quite as well, this is what I turn to.
  5. Make designs on cookies or frosting.  Instead of the old fork trick to "decorate" your cookies try one of these puppies!
  6. Crush crackers, cookies, graham crackers.  Basically anything you need to crush for a given recipe.  The list is endless:  corn flakes for breading chicken, graham crackers for cheesecake and so on.
  7. Make quick and easy guacamole.
  8. A toddler art tool.  For hours of fun hand your toddler (or child) a potato masher, some paint and let them go to town.
  9. Mixing paint.  Now it's worth mentioning that you should have a separate one for this, or an old rusty one.  Something tells me using something to mix paint that you then turn around to mash potatoes is probably not a good idea.
  10.  And finally metal sculptures.  If you are the artsy type then you can use these, either old or new, to make an abstract piece of art.

It's not just for mashing potatoes anymore!
