Free Your Mind Fridays

A few things I've learned away from home and many of the "luxaries"...

  • I. MISS. MY. BED!!!  In this short week I have really come to realize just how awesome our bed is.  At home we have a king sized memory foam mattress that I knew was awesome but I have come to appreciate it more so now.  Where we are staying the beds are less than desirable to say the least.  They are queen size which is smaller than we are used to but in the end not a huge deal,  they are HARD, they seem to have a hump in the middle of them.  Because of this the husband and I have only shared the bed ONE night!  We are smart enough to realize that getting sleep is more important in the end but I miss my husband and I MISS MY BED!
  • Not having a dishwasher has been no big deal.  Being spoiled and having dishwashers in all of the homes I've lived in since moving out of my parents home I thought this would be a bigger deal.  I thought I would dread having to wash the dishes but in reality it's not too bad.  Granted we have been using paper plates but the worst part is really the post dinner clean-up.  It's also been helpful the DH has been pitching in and doing dishes here and there also.
  • For the short term not having cable has been no biggie either.  I try to limit the tv during the day anyway so having it off during the day is nothing new.  What has saved us?  Netflicks and Redbox!!  We keep a steady rotation  of Netflicks and in the couple of days between we head to the Redbox.  The worst part of no cable has been the evening but as long as we have a movie to watch it's ok.  I am not going so far as to say let's get rid of cable at home but I thought it would be miserable; it has not been
  • You really can do things outside in 100° weather but there is a trick to this.  First you need to go early in the morning when it's not terribly hot.  Second you need to stay outside until your done!  By coming out early the heat gradually comes and you are already a big sweaty mess so you don't notice too much.  You need to stay outside because once you go in you WILL feel just how hot it is!  The other day we were going to walk around St. Augustine after we ate lunch but by then we had cooled off and when we walked back into the sweltering heat we felt all 102 of those degrees.  Before eating I would have been game.
  • I am secretly hoping my 3 year old will appreciate his toys so much more once we get home.  He literally has 3 toys to play with here and a handful of his sisters toys if he gets desperate.  I am really hoping that this helps him realize that all the toys at home are a treat and he's lucky to have so many.  I know this is a long shot because we are talking about a 3 year old but one can always dream can't they?  At the very least perhaps his toys will be like new again and I can get a few weeks without hearing him talk about more.
  • Since we have been here we've been able to have lots of family time and I LOVE IT!  I know once we get home to the everyday hustle and bustle and our normal schedules this will stop but in the meantime I am thoroughly enjoying it!!

    1. The dishwasher thing is funny, I actually did not mind when we lived in the Mallard Dr house and did not have one...I could not, however, live without a microwave!

I am thinking of doing reduced cable in the new house. I find I do a lot of Netflix on the Wii and I really prefer Nick Jr. On Demand since it is much easier to control how many hours the TV is on. I actually can't remember the last time I watched TV in real time! Let me know if/when the novelty wears off...

Glad you are enjoying GA. Have fun and soak up every minute of that precious family time.
