Problem With SAHM-dom

THERE'S NO ROUTINE!!

I'm not talking about the kids I am talking about YOU!

When you work you wake up at a certain time.  You hop in the shower, brush your teeth, do your hair, have some breakfast, drink some coffee and then head to work.  Or whatever your routine may be.  Typically Monday through Friday you do the same things, in the same order at about the same time.  Let's face it, if you didn't you'd never make it to work on time.

When you stay at home you wake with the kid/s (if they're an early riser like mine), you brush your teeth when the thought of doing so and a free minute happen to coincide and you get a shower when you can.  There's no set ways of doing anything and half the time you find yourself forgetting things.  I couldn't tell you how many days it's 2 pm and I realized I haven't brushed my teeth!

Showers are always a toss-up.  I always get them but sometimes it's at night, sometimes before the DH leaves for work, during morning nap on some occasions and even afternoon nap if I haven't had any time up until then.  On days I'm completely desperate and we have somewhere to be I put on a show for my almost 4 year old and put the baby in her crib with some toys.  I don't like it but desperate times call for desperate measures right?  Forget blow drying hair, applying lotion or any of those more luxurious things!

Sure, it would seem easy to just create a routine.  You stay at home so just do the same thing every morning.  Well it's not that simple folks, all you parents will understand exactly what I'm talking about.

Let's say little Johnny usually wakes up at 6 am, the DH usually leaves by 6:30 and little Sally usually wakes at 7am.  Well if you have a spouse/significant other in the military you know schedules change like the wind.  Some days they leave at 4:30 am and others at 7am.  Similarly if you have children you know most mornings they may wake at a roundabout time but what about that wonderful night they're up every hour on the hour?  Or the morning they wanted to beat the roosters at their own game?

I'm not saying I would change anything, I love staying home for the most part.  Sometimes I just wish there were more routine.  That I could take my shower, blow dry my hair (if I were in to that sort of thing) and take the time to slather lotion all over my crazy dry skin!  Same goes for the night too, if only I could get in the habit of face washing, lotion applying, and mouthwashing.

Of course not having a routine is nice too sometimes...

  1. Ditto for everything you said (except my hubby isn't in the military).

  2. I hear you. It seems like we never have a real "game plan" so I never get a chance to plan to get stuff done. Add in that doing my stuff (you know crazy luxuries like bathing and eating) is always the last priority, it can be tough. May the universe strike me down now, I am almost looking forward to when we are on a boat so I can pull one body out of the equation...not really, but kind of!
