Buzz Lightyear Cake

My sons birthday party was today and he chose Buzz Lightyear for his theme (not Toy Story, just Buzz cause it's so easy to find stuff with only Buzz).  In years past I was lucky enough to have a cake, a very good one at that, done for me and I needed not worry about that part.  It was FABULOUS.  However I no longer have the bakery hook-up that I once had so this year I decided to tackle the cake myself and buy one at the store if it went horribly wrong!

Turns out it went pretty well although it's time consuming and there's no way around it.  I did an 8" chocolate cake (recipe can be found HERE) and a dozen yellow cupcakes.  It was fairly simple but looked pretty cute.

It was my first time ever working with fondant.  I colored it no problem, warmed it in the microwave a few seconds to get it softer and even thought enough to put on gloves.  Rolling it out was a different story.  I put down powdered sugar but I guess I didn't put enough.  It took me a while to roll it out and then it stuck terribly to the counter!  Being lazy as I am I didn't feel like rolling it out again so I covered the cracks the best I could and used it anyway.  Check one!

I then cooked some batter in a muffin top pan I had to make a moon and a planet (since Buzz is a space ranger).  I colored the icing and carefully applied it.  Voila!  I didn't have enough time but I would have liked to put some small stars on it, it may not have looked so bare.  Live and learn.

Finally for the cupcakes I iced them in green and put 3 eyes and a mouth on them.  These were made to resemble to aliens in the Toy Story movies.  They were suppose to have an antennae and ears but again, not enough time.  I still think they looked cute and it was enough of a similarity for you to get the point.  After all I'm no professional cake decorator!  The instruction on how to make those cupcakes can be found HERE.  Those were not my idea but everything about the cake was.

All in all I think it turned out well and more importantly my son LOVED it!  In the end that's all that really matters!!

  1. I checked the link you had up and found the cowgirl jessie and woody badge cookies. I must say that the wheels are turning. The alien cupcakes are adorable and really bring it all together.

  2. I think the cake was a success, and the most important thing is that Nathan loved it.
