Apple Pickin' and My First Apple Pie!
My friend and I went apple picking last Saturday. I've been wanting to go for quite sometime but could never find anyone to go with. Naturally when she mentioned something a couple weeks ago I jumped on it! We soon set a date and it turned out to be a gorgeous one. Here I can be seen channeling my inner Vanna.
My friend Nicki, who originally got the gears turning. Couldn't have been more perfect since I have been wanting to make a big batch of homemade applesauce!
Another fun thing is that they also had pick you own broccoli and cauliflower. We had just had a week full of broccoli recipes so I passed on that but I thought it'd be fun to hack some perfectly fresh cauliflower! I knew I could always find a recipe.
This was priced by the head so they said pick a big one. I would say we accomplished this, have you ever seen cauliflower so large?? As you can see it was much bigger than my head!
The first thing requested by the DH when told of my apple picking plans was an apple pie. I'm not really a pie person but it sounded good to me too and a perfect way to kick off the fall! Now considering the fact that I have NEVER made a pie before I really wasn't sure how this was going to go. I used THIS recipe and hoped for the best. At the very least I figured it would taste good eventhough it may not look good. Here are a million thin slices of apple. It must have taken me an hour to cut up all the apples!
Here's the pie after it came out of the oven. Absolutely beautiful crust! ( I won't mention the reason that it's a major close up is because it bubbled and oozed all over the edges making it not look to pretty there.) And yes I did do a lattice top for my first pie! Honestly it took me about 10 mins to even figure out how to do it, then I cracked the code and it was easy as PIE!
A piece from right out the oven, all set to go à la mode with some homemade vanilla bean ice cream (that was simply divine if I do say so myself...and I don't even LIKE vanilla!).
Grandma Ople's did not disappoint and it had to be the BEST apple pie I've ever had! I will be changing one thing if (or more likely when) I make it again. They have you pour the "syrup" over the crust but next time I am going to pour it on before the crust and then save a little to brush on the crust. It does give the crust a beautiful golden brown color and a bit of a crunch so I understand why they say to do that but it was a major PITA. Next time I'll save myself some trouble but otherwise this recipe rocks!
